  35. A. Disk Compression
  36.  
  37. If you are using a disk compression utility, the available hard
  38. disk space reported by the installation program may not be
  39. accurate. Disk compression utilities can only ESTIMATE available
  40. hard disk space. If the installation process is not successful,
  41. you may need to free additional hard disk space by removing
  42. unneeded files or applications from your hard drive.

  45. B. Network Installation
  46.  
  47. This product is designed as a "stand-alone" application and does
  48. not support use by multiple users over a network.

  51. C. Under Windows 3.1, Compton's Complete Reference Collection works
  52. best with Windows operating in a 386-enhanced mode with a 20 MB
  53. permanent swap file established on a non-compressed drive.

  56. D. Installation Instructions
  57.  
  58. Compton's suggests that you exit all applications before
  59. installing this product. Other programs and drivers running on
  60. the computer may interfere with the installation process.

  62. 1. Installation for Windows 95
  63.  
  64. Simply place the Compton's CD in the CD-ROM drive. The Windows
  65. 95 AutoPlay function automatically offers the option to install
  66. the program. Click on "Install" to begin the installation.
  67.  
  68. If the Compton's CD is already in the CD-ROM drive and you have
  69. bypassed the AutoPlay function, follow these steps to begin the
  70. installation: Click on "Start" and select "Run ...". In the
  71. "Open" box, type "D:\SETUP.EXE" and press Enter. If your CD-ROM
  72. drive is not drive "D", substitute the letter of your CD-ROM
  73. drive when you type this statement. For example, if your CD-ROM
  74. drive is drive "E", type "E:\SETUP.EXE" and press Enter.

  76. When the program has finished installing the files, you are
  77. notified that the installation has been completed. Then,
  78. whenever you want to use Compton's Complete Reference Collection,
  79. simply insert the Compton's CD into your CD-ROM drive and click
  80. on "OK" when asked if you want to run the program. To start the
  81. program when the CD is already in your CD-ROM drive, click on
  82. "Start", choose "Programs", choose "Compton's Home Library",
  83. choose "The Complete Reference Collection 1998" folder,
  84. and then choose "The Complete Reference Collection 1998".

  86. 2. Installation for Windows 3.1

  88. From the Program Manager, open the "File" menu and select
  89. "Run...". In the "Command Line" box, type "D:\SETUP.EXE" and
  90. press Enter. If your CD-ROM drive is not drive "D", substitute
  91. the letter of your CD-ROM drive when you type this statement.
  92. For example, if your CD-ROM drive is drive "E", type
  93. "E:\SETUP.EXE" and press Enter.

  95. Once the program files have been installed, the installation
  96. program scans for Video for Windows. If Video for Windows
  97. version 1.1e (or later) is already installed on your system, the
  98. program offers you the option of starting the Reference Collection
  99. or returning to the Program Manager. If Video for Windows is not
  100. installed on your system, the installation program offers to
  101. install it for you. Once Video for Windows 1.1e is installed,
  102. simply open the "Compton's Home Library" group and double-click
  103. on the "Compton's Complete Reference Collection 1998" icon to start
  104. the program.

  106. To exit the installation program at any time, click Exit or
  107. press F3.

  110. E. Meeting the Minimum System Requirements
  111.  
  112. The installation program automatically determines if your computer
  113. system meets the minimum requirements to run the Reference
  114. Collection. If your system fails to meet the requirements, the
  115. installation program tells you exactly which requirements were not
  116. met. Three potential problems you may encounter and their solutions
  117. are described below:
  118.  
  119.   --"Detected: No suitable wave device"
  120.                  or
  121.     "Detected: No MIDI device"
  122.                  or
  123.     "Detected: No suitable MIDI device"
  124.  
  125.      If you get any of these messages, make sure that you have
  126.      installed the Windows drivers that came with your sound
  127.      board. This product requires at least one wave device
  128.      capable of at least 8-bit mono at 22.050kHz, and at least
  129.      one MIDI device with FM synthesis, all channels.
  130.  
  131.      NOTE: Because of their special hardware setup, certain IBM
  132.      Aptiva and Thinkpad systems may generate these messages
  133.      even though they DO have the proper equipment and software.
  134.      If you own one of these systems and encounter one of the
  135.      above messages, disregard the message and proceed with the
  136.      installation.

  138. To check that your system has met the minimum requirements, you
  139. can run the program CNMSYSI.EXE, located in the "\WIN32"
  140. directory (Windows 95 users) or the "\WIN" directory (Windows
  141. 3.1 users) on the Compton's CD-ROM.

  143. Alternatively, load the Reference Collection and click on the
  144. "Tools" button. Then, while holding down the "Ctrl" key on your
  145. keyboard, click on the "About CRC98" button. A screen will display
  146. the minimum program requirements and the components found on your
  147. system.

  150. F. Running Directly from the CD-ROM
  151.  
  152. It is possible to run this product directly from the CD-ROM without
  153. installing it on your hard drive. This is not recommended
  154. because the program performance will be significantly slower
  155. than normal. Also, any settings or preferences you change while
  156. using the program, such as the desired online service, will
  157. not be recorded; the program will return to the default settings
  158. the next time you start it. You will also not be able to
  159. subscribe to some of the online features available.

  162. II. Troubleshooting

  164. This product has been successfully tested with a wide variety of
  165. hardware and peripheral equipment. It should be noted, however,
  166. that Microsoft Windows is a "device-independent" operating
  167. system that relies on device drivers to communicate with the
  168. various devices on your system. Occasionally, issues may occur
  169. with one of these drivers. Conflicts with sound cards, video
  170. displays, and printers are often resolved by reconfiguring or
  171. updating the device drivers supplied by the manufacturers. This
  172. product is not designed specifically for compatibility with any
  173. particular hardware item.

  176. A. Troubleshooting for both Windows 95 and Windows 3.1
  177.  
  178. 1. Font Problems/Font Error Messages when Starting the Program
  179.  
  180. This product requires that certain fonts be present on your
  181. system to display text correctly. If the program is unable to
  182. find the fonts it needs, some text may display poorly or in
  183. unreadable fonts. (If you are using Windows 95, please also see
  184. the section "Text Is Illegible or Displays in Wing Ding or Symbol
  185. Font" under "Troubleshooting for Windows 95" below.)

  187. If the program cannot find the proper fonts, you may see
  188. one of the following error messages after the introductory
  189. screen:

  191.   --"The following TrueType Fonts were not found: ..."
  192.                     or
  193.     "The following Fonts were not found: ..."

  195.       To correct this problem, make a note of the missing font
  196.       or fonts listed, then exit the program.
